Cornwall, waves, biomechanics and the mini chedder binge
Posted: April 7, 2012 Filed under: Uncategorized Leave a comment »Right, so I was back and then I went away again, but I promise I didnt swan off on a jolly- I have been in Cornwall doing a ISA Level 2 Coaching Course. The course is the highest level ISA coaching course on offer and was the first time it was run in the UK.
I was able to meet up with Baz Hall who has been a legend in British Surf coaching for a number of years and I was fortunate to have been part of junior British Training Camps that he led. The group was a real cool bunch, and we learnt alot from our course presenter Jamo (he was australian) who was possible the most excitable man I have met. The course involved biomechanics of surfing, sports psychology, nutrition, training, training for contests, and alot more. My head nearly exploded from all the different things we can do as surfers to improve not only in contests but free surfing aswell! I also was on an average of 15 cups of tea a day, and found myself smashing around 5-7 packets of mini chedders a day (as you can see my nutrition is impeccable, body is a temple and all that).
I managed to sneek a few surfs in with the Sennen crew- James Parry, Oran Lynch, Rob Wright, Sam Bleakley and Mike Lay at Gwenver which was so much fun, very cold as I decided to take my boots and gloves off (a distinctive change of pace from oz), and the banks were really lined up.
And so I am now back to my favourite place, until Thursday when I go to Barbados…….. Only kidding!
Surprise!
Posted: April 1, 2012 Filed under: Uncategorized Leave a comment »I am back in Jersey, but not before a little excursion to the UK!
My little sis Frankie and her boyfriend Mike were heading to Edinburgh to see one of her favourite bands, The Civil Wars, so I decided to surprise her with visit. With the help of my other sister Grace, who has nearly finished her degree in Edinburgh, we managed to suprise her at lunch and went to the gig that evening. The Civil Wars were AMAZING! Havent been to a gig like that in along time and the music they played was perfect. I have included a link to my favourite song here
I may have fallen asleep in the warm-up act. Grace got pictures. So rock and roll.
Had a great weekend just hanging out and cruising round Edinburgh before I scammed a lift down to Liverpool, where the weather was cracking- I had about 8 BBqs, a few beers in the sun and a great time seeing Frankies uni and the city. We even managed to see a Rock and Blues Legend, Joe Bonomassi, who was incredible. Eric Clapton rates him as one of the worlds best guitarists and you can see why, I couldnt believe how quick he was!
So the surprise was a relative success (who am I kidding, it was the best surprise ever!) and I am now back in Jersey! And what weather to come back to! I am in the process of putting in summer season of Lightning Bolt and Pull-In and the UGG Australia spring/ summer range for Ladies and Men will be in soon too! Come down for a little look
Hope to see you all soon, as Tiger would say TTFN

Noosa Festival- Nasal wanderings, Waffling and the joys of a staff pass!
Posted: March 20, 2012 Filed under: Uncategorized 2 Comments »What a week!
The Noosa festival surfing has been and gone and I had an absolute ball! We had waves at the points every day, there was some incredible surfing, I got to commentate a massive amount, I got so much free stuff (definately a massive positive for me!), met up with so many cool people, got to surf loads inbetween, got so amped on surfing, am still so amped on surfing, made a fool of myself a few times and all in the space of 7 days!
I’ve put up a few photos, sorry there are not many interesting ones there- it rained pretty much the whole week. We had a few great days but there was always those pesky clouds around to ruin our fun! The most rain happened on the last day, there was so much run off from the storm drain and the rain formed a river in the sand, that it almost took part of the judging stand away!
The set up of the festival was epic, there was a bar/spectators area/ bar on the beach, little village of stalls and it meant the festival stuck together (previous years areas are split and divides the evenings). The logger comp went so well- some amazing surfing from some of the most talented guys on longboards at the moment. There was a bit of controversy before the festival as there was no high performance mal comp, but I believe the logger complimented the festival to a tee- everyone had a smile on their faces and the size of the waves didnt matter, it was all about the noserides, hipwiggling and style! I spose you can see from the entries at the next pro comp in oz (24) compared to the festival (nearly 48) where alot of the longboard community is pushing, and when you see some of the guys from Japan, oz and america pushing log surfing you can see why. Anyways, I got to the quarters before I came up against Harrison Roach (eventual winner), Harley Ingleby and Josh Constable (former world champions). I gave it a go but came up short. The Noserider was another awesome event- some competitors clocked up rides on the nose over 40 secs! (hang tens get double time). I missed out on the quarters by half a sec but again, bettered my last performance in the division so wasnt too upset (I got a little upset when someone said half a sec could have been the difference in someone clicking the stopwatch and had I thought about that?)
And to the commentary, I had one of the best seats in the house and got some great experience commentating alongside JC (who had commentated at the WCT Quicksilver Pro a few weeks previous) and it was great to get to know him and the ways of the mic. I must add that in an attempt to not get an oz twang my accent has gone slightly cockney and saying the phrase ‘red having a little goose at this wave’ or ‘blue taking that one all the way to the dairy’ gets a few raised eyebrows.
So the festival has finished and pretty much everyone has gone home, waves have still been epic at tea tree and hopefully get one more day of waves before I start the trek home. It’s a little sad but the people and the atmosphere have been epic! The walk along first point can turn from a 2 min jaunt to a 30 min high 5-ing, big hugs, shak-attack, catch up wander. And it was great to get to have a few beers with all those guys.
I shall stop my rambling at that. I hope to see you all soon!
I shall leave you with this;
When you are informed that there is a premiere of a new surf film, do not, I repeat, DO NOT think it will be a glitzy affair and turn up in a shirt and tie, you will get laughed at- alot. You will also get asked the questions ‘who’s funeral was it?’ or ‘who got married?’ or my favourite ‘you’re the POME who has been waffling all week!’

Noosa Shire and sliding little peelers….
Posted: March 9, 2012 Filed under: Uncategorized Leave a comment »Well hello there!
Sorry its been a while since my last update, to be honest I have’nt really been up to much except surf and chill on my balcony! Not the kind of things you guys probably want to hear about!
I have been in Noosa now around a week and a bit and it has been awesome. The apartment I managed to snag has a cracking view of the top of Nationals (one of the points here in Noosa) it also has two balconies and a shared balcony aswell! It is located just to the side of the National park so is surrounded by green and very peaceful! Although the first few days were a little sketchy as a good size snake named sidney was reluctant to let his pad go- I was all up for him keeping his spot outside (he didnt really take up too much room). The only time I was worried about him was when I couldnt see him, I heard him and his mates enjoyed the odd squeeze prank so thought he might have been trying to sneek up on me!
The waves have been so good. My favourite wave in Noosa is Little Cove and that has been working loads and with very few people out! Quite amazing really, its not been big, the biggest day being a smidge over head high, but just perfect right hand point waves. Yesterday I had Little Cove to myself for about 40 mins- couldnt believe my luck! I have also surfed first point quite abit but havent made it round to tea tree yet. Everytime I think about it it is mobbed and I end up back at little cove! There was one day I walked to one of the more open beaches when the swell was small, to a beach called Alexandria. The waves were great and no-one was out and I was there for about 3 hours. When it came time to walk home I took my shorts off, popped my towel round me and
started walking (to avoid terrible short chaffage!). Unknown to me, and it became clear why everyone I passed that I gave a ‘good morning’ too greeted me with a weird look, is that Alexandria is a nudist beach! Everyone I passed must have thought I’d been surfing nude! Queensland has been (ironically) living up to its name as the sunshine state- there was nearly three metres of rain in 24 hours the other day, some terrible flooding all around Noosa. Its really sad to see on the news that some of the people evacuating their homes have had to do it all again after floods 12 months ago. Hopefully a bit of sun the next few days!
The Noosa festival of Surfing starts in a few days time so there should be a few people coming up for the contest. I’m going to give it a go in the Noserider and the Logger comps, there are so many good guys here so it should be fun to watch (when I get knocked out first round!) I’m also working at the festival as a commentator, which i’m also looking forward to! I was asked the other day, along with former world champions Jen Smith and Josh Constable (I still don’t know why I was asked!) to do a promotion for a car company for 2013! We got to bomb around on a beach 4x4ing around sunrise and then I had to chat about Jersey, Noosa and surfing! At one point Josh (I was’nt allowed to drive for some reason) nearly bogged the car as the tide was coming in- luckily for him he had it in neutral!
I hope this blog has’nt sent you all to sleep! And I trust that you are all well and staying warm- I heard the weather has been
pretty good back home, is this true?
I shall let you know how the festival goes!
Take care,
joe
